Story
The birth
of modern Cigna Health dates back to 1792 with the establishment of
America’s first Marine Insurance
Company, the Insurance Company of North America (INA). The next few
years saw a tremendous rise in the business of INA. In 1865, the Connecticut
General Life Insurance Company (CG) was formed. The businesses of
both INA and CG were merged in 1982 with a new name of CIGNA. The
subsequent years saw a series of mergers and acquisitions, and in
1993, Cigna adopts the new “Tree of Life” corporate symbol. The years
1998 and 199 saw the sale of Cigna’s individual life insurance business
to Lincoln National Corporation, and its property and casualty insurance
business to ACE Limited, respectively. The reinsurance business was
sold to a subsidiary of Swiss Reinsurance Company in 2000. And in
2004, Cigna sold its pension business to Prudential Financial.
